So, you want to be in the band!!!

Band is a transformative opportunity to gain musical skills, new friends, be part of a team, and build confidence and character. Talk to any former "Band Kid," and they will tell you about the fun band contests, hours of fun with friends, and how much music means to them.  A homeschool band requires commitment from parents, students, and instructors to thrive. Band is an individual and team sport! Students will experience a weekly large-group rehearsal, a private lesson, and home practice time. This is a top-notch music education! Annually, there are holiday parties, fall and spring concerts, concert contests, solo and ensemble contests, region and state band auditions, fundraising events, music field trips, band trips out of town or state, and more!

Instrument Selection:

Concert Band instruments include:

Brass - Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba

Woodwind - Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe, Bassoon

Percussion (Students play snare, tympani, mallets, and more)

Instruments can be rented or purchased. At an instrument fair, Dr. Block will also be consulting with students and parents on instrument selection.  We recommend that beginning students acquire their instrument after meeting with Dr. Block and before band camp.  Specific large instruments (some percussion, tuba, etc.) could be available for rental through Dr. Block and SAGU when available.

Concerts, Events, and Competitions

Southern Star Band is a part of the Texas Private School Music Educators Association (TPSMEA) for band contests: concert band, all-region, all-state, solo and ensemble, and others.

Pep Band: The Intermediate Band will perform pep music in the stands for DASCHE Spartan Football Games.

Concerts:  SSB will hold Christmas and Spring Concerts.

Events: SSB will participate in parades, community events, and homeschool graduations. Each year, the band will attend a music festival either locally in DFW or possibly travel on band trips to other states.

Band Camp: Band camp is an important week for students' musical instruction, group collaboration, and relationship building. Band camp has different focuses, including beginners, ensembles, preparation for fall music, instrument specialization, music theory, fun activities, and marching band camp one day in the future. 

How do I register my beginner band student?

• Review the information packet and get questions answered

• Register for an instrument fair slot @ southernstarfinearts.org 

• Attend an Instrument Fair to be fitted for an instrument (Instrument selection based on availability, fit, and student interest)

• On-Time Beginner Registration opens Thursday, April 16th, 2026, and closes May 30th, 2026, for Beginners. Late registration closes September 15th

• Please fill out a registration form at the provided link when it opens (Coming in April)

• Pay the deposit of $300

• Private Lessons will be scheduled for the year in Late July for Mondays or Tuesdays
